For 20 European science students, the summer of 2010 started with a bang…and a seat on the Science Bus. They were the lucky few who were selected to embark on a mind-blowing bus trip to ESOF2010 in Torino. On this seven-day journey, the students got the opportunity to experience the fascinating world of life sciences with all their senses (e.g. pizza with the prof). youth = future of science The Science Bus enabled young scientists to get a first sniff at the atmosphere surrounding the professional field of life sciences. Promoting science among youth is a common goal of Euroscience and Janssen Research & Development, as they are the scientists of the future. The seats on the Science Bus were filled with a heterogeneous mix of students, coming from different backgrounds, all with a passion for science. The students came from the European universities of Lund (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark), Amsterdam (Holland) and Antwerp (Belgium), all long-standing partners of Janssen Research & Development. once in a lifetime experience The students were submerged in a seven-day string of presentations, discussions and workshops with some of the world’s most renowned life scientists and Nobel Prize winners. The possibility to experience new developments in a personal and hands on manner, made this trip a once in a lifetime experience for the students. The importance of social media for the scientific world and the interaction with business were important eye openers for most of them. In addition to their seat on the Science Bus, the students got the assignment to outline their view on life sciences in 2030. The story of this exclusive journey is now published and bundled in a booklet, together with the students’ views on life sciences in the future. We published a digital version of those interesting insights on the website www.sciencebus.se.
