September 3, 2020 10:15 - 11:45

The recently published “Declaration on Sustainable Researcher Careers” provides recommendations, drawn up by major researcher communities, in an effort to empower researchers and secure a globally competitive European Research Area. The document recommends the following critical points to be considered by all stakeholders of European research: Provide sustainable career prospects for researchers Deploy career management services at universities, organisations employing researchers Put more emphasis on transferable skills training and recognition Provide a wide variety of networking options and services in and outside of academia Failure to address these recommendations is expected to negatively impact on the 1.88 million researchers (in and outside of academia) currently working in the 28 European Union member states in terms of their job security, employability, and mental health. Therefore, the aim of this session is to: raise awareness, timeliness, and consequences (industry competitiveness and well-being) involve major opinion leaders, researchers, research funders, and policy makers to come up with concrete, hands-on recommendations and good practices during this session   In this interactive session, participants will be involved to discuss and the operationalize of the above mentioned four points, with concrete actionable policy recommendations. The session will consist of the following segments: Brief overview on the topic, presenting key problems (plenary) Four groups will discuss the four issues. Everyone in the audience needs to pick at least 1 issue to suggest: means of financial (internal, external) support policy or legislation knowledge sharing or knowledge generation activities Share and synthesize recommendations (plenary) As an output, organisers will edit the ideas and recommendations received, and publish them as open access policy recommendations.
