Mag. Dr. Erich Griessler studied sociology and history at the Universities of Vienna (1983–1990) and Maastricht. After subsequent employments at University of Vienna (1990-1992), at Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf (1992-1995) and at Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Medicine and Health Sociology (1995-1999) he has been senior researcher at the IHS since 1999. Since 2016, he is head of the research group "Techno-Science and Societal Transformation". His research interests include Science and Technology Studies (STS), sociology of biomedicine, Ethical Legal and Social Aspects (ELSA) of biotechnology, citizen engagement and participation in research and innovation (R&I) policy, political regulation of biotechnology, political sociology, and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). He and his group are currently coordinating the H2020 project NewHoRRIzon and have been, or are still involved in, many RRI projects funded by the European Commission (ENERI, HEIRRI, JERRI, MoRRI, Res-AGorA, RiConfigure, SATORI, SUPER_MoRRI) and in research studying and stimulating citizen participation in research, innovation and policy making (EBIS, XENO, CIT-PART, PAGANINI, POPEYE). From 2007 to 2013 he was speaker of the section Technik- und Wissenschaftssoziologie of the Austrian Society of Sociology. From 2011 to 2013 he acted as Vice President of the Austrian Society of Sociology.
