Modern research is no individual task but an international endeavor with collaboration across national borders. To encourage early-career researchers to develop this collaborative attitude and European thinking in when planning their career, EuroScience established the European Young Researchers Award (EYRA). Every two years the award is presented to a young researcher who has exemplified outstanding research achievement with a European dimension.

From vaccines to climate change, we need science and scientists more than ever to make sense of the world around us and to tackle future crises. To help achieve this goal, the European Research Council (ERC) launched the Public Engagement with Research Award to encourage scientists and scholars to engage with audiences beyond their fields of research.

These are lyrics from a famous Dutch song, but these questions are still intriguing because there is still so much we don’t know about the universe. Will the next phase of human space exploration include stations on the Moon? Prof. Ewine van Dischoeck, an astronomy professor at Leiden University and organiser of the Space for Science sessions, thinks so! At ESOF2022, there’s plenty of Space for Science, one of seven tracks of the scientific programme.

We have been living in a world with the COVID-19 pandemic for the last two years. Naturally, this sudden global event has brought to the forefront many new questions about our preparedness for future pandemics. Yes, vaccines were rapidly developed this time, but it’s essential to re-examine how we can prevent and address the challenges with which we will face in the coming years and decades.

The seven tracks will challenge the keynote speakers (and other delegates) to address the most pressing issue of today’s world within their field of expertise and provide an interdisciplinary and multifaceted perspective that will set the tone for the following programme sessions.
