Leiden, Key to Discovery

Everything that characterises Leiden’s Golden Age heritage survives to this day: the picturesque historic city centre still holds its landmarks from that time in the form of beautiful city mansions by age old canals. The Hooglandse Kerk and Pieterskerk were built even before that time and are surrounded by narrow medieval streets, hidden courtyards and gables portraying the occupations of the original inhabitants. Here is where you will find many shops, galleries, antiques and book stores, fashion boutiques, restaurants and cafes. From higher up, De Burcht provides a spectacular view over the old town.

With its university and Bio Science Park, Leiden is among the most prominent scientific knowledge centres in Europe. The university holds a global top ranking in law and languages, as well as in a broad range of medical, archaeological and physics research, appearing in the top 80 best universities of four internationally leading rankings. The high quality and outstanding level of innovation in its scientific research is one of Leiden’s great strengths. There is a wide range of research facilities available. Leiden is a preferred choice of many internationally renowned scientists for meetings and top level research in a host of academic fields.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center

Naturalis Biodiversity Center

Fascination for biodiversity, that’s our foundation. In our award-winning museum (European Museum of the Year 2021) we show the beauty of nature. Through our impressive collection, knowledge and data, we record all life on Earth. This is important, as our future depends on biodiversity. Everything in nature is connected, and balance is vitally important for its continued existence. We research nature in order to preserve biodiversity. This is how we contribute to solutions for major, global issues involving climate, living environment, food supply and medicine.

LINO

LINO

Lithuanian Research Development and Innovation Liaison Office in Brussels (LINO) aims to strengthen European research cooperation by facilitating the successful integration of Lithuanian researchers into international research projects. LINO Office is also monitoring, analyzing and informing about the developments of the EU science, technology and innovation policies. We promote cross-border and international collaboration in research and innovation. In order to solve all national and global challenges using scientific knowledge, we have to cooperate. No country can solve today’s challenges alone. Often the most exciting breakthroughs are reached when people with different backgrounds join forces. We are inviting Lithuanian researchers, scientists, technology developers, innovators, start-ups and spin-offs to use the services of LINO Office to make great things happen by working together in the European Research Area.

ITER

ITER

ITER—designed to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power—will be the world’s largest experimental fusion facility. Fusion is the process that powers the Sun and the stars: when light atomic nuclei fuse together to form heavier ones, a large amount of energy is released. Fusion research is aimed at developing a safe, abundant and environmentally responsible energy source. ITER is also a first-of-a-kind global collaboration. Europe is contributing almost half of the costs of its construction, while the other six Members to this joint international venture (China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA), are contributing equally to the rest. The ITER Project is under construction in Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, in the south of France.

For more information on the ITER Project, visit: http://www.iter.org/

NWO selects and funds research proposals based on recommendations from expert scientists and other experts in the Netherlands and abroad. NWO encourages national and international collaboration, invests in large research facilities, facilitates knowledge utilisation and manages research institutes. NWO funds more than 7.200 research projects at universities and knowledge institutions.

Europlanet 2024 RI

Europlanet 2024 RI

We’re explorers, lured by the promise of space beyond our Earth. Imagine that we have just landed on Mars – what technology and science has taken us there and what do we need to survive and thrive? Who are the Europeans supporting exploration of our Solar System and how can we all join in the adventure? Visit our stand at ESOF2022 to find out more about what’s happening in planetary exploration and how you can get involved.

The Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure supports planetary science by providing free access to facilities, field sites, virtual tools and services, and activities to support the community. At ESOF2022, we are partnering with another EU-funded project, EXPLORE, which is deploying artificial intelligence and visual analytics to fully exploit the vast amounts of scientific data sent back by space missions.

Does life exist elsewhere in the Solar System? Can humans establish a base on another planet? With international space agencies making ambitious plans for exploring the Moon and Mars in the next decade, answers to these fundamental questions may soon be in reach.

These projects have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 871149 (Europlanet 2024 RI) and No 101004214 (EXPLORE).

International Science Council
cOAlition S

cOAlition S

cOAlition S (https://www.coalition-s.org) is an international consortium of 27 research funding and performing organisations from Europe, North America and Africa who support Plan S, an Open Access publishing initiative launched in September 2018. It is supported by the European Commission and Science Europe and hosted by the European Science Foundation in Strasbourg, France.

Plan S requires that, with effect from 2021, all scholarly publications on the results from research funded by public or private grants provided by national, regional, and international research councils and funding bodies must be published in Open Access Journals, on Open Access Platforms, or made immediately available through Open Access Repositories without embargo. cOAlition S has developed a number of Plan S-aligned Open Access policies and tools to work together with the scholarly community towards a fair and transparent academic publishing landscape.

ESOF2022 provides a unique space for thought-provoking discussions about scientific research and innovation that could solve the challenges we are facing today, especially if we also harness the power of Open Access to scholarly publications. We invite you to visit our online booth and attend our sessions to find out more about the Plan S policies, services and tools and how you can benefit from them.
