Each edition of ESOF has a slogan that guides the thought behind the conference. How do we understand the slogan Life Changes Science – the guiding idea behind ESOF2024?

Anna Budzanowska

Katowice as the European City of Science 2024 is a community committed to both the celebration of science and the challenges of the modern world. We place this approach at the center of our thinking about the future of society and the place where we live.

'Life changes science'

As civilization develops, so does the complexity and scope of the challenges we face.

ESOF Katowice 2024 will be a platform for discussions in 6 thematic areas - global, but especially close to the Polish scientific community, selected by the Katowice Universities Consortium.

When selecting the topics, we started from the premise that the first step in making people's lives extraordinary is understanding.

Societies function together by solving the challenges of civilization and the problems of other people. In our world, science can provide answers or predict how to react when life brings difficulties, what to do to make other people happy, what motivates and inspires, and what causes discomfort or pain. Knowledge is the foundation of our civilization and as humans we can use it to solve our problems and make them better.

We believe that by analyzing the full spectrum of data about people and their historical interactions with content, actions, decisions, choices and discoveries, we are laying the foundation for future generations to make the right decisions for the challenges of their time.

During ESOF 2024, we will discuss fears and hopes for the future and what we can do to avoid worst-case scenarios. We will discuss the issue of social responsibility, honesty and morality in the context of the scientific and technological revolution. ESOF 2024 will be about humanistic values in a changing world, reflecting the evolution of a broader understanding of our society.
