Katowice is the first city in Central Europe to have been crowned with the title of the European City of Science. The title is given by EuroScience (European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology) in cooperation with the European Commission.

Giving Katowice the title of the European City of Science involves not only a range of challenges but also plenty of opportunities. The city is becoming a central point at the intersection of science and the lives of its residents, which may stimulate a multifaceted public discourse and development. Therefore, six main thematic paths have been paved, and the discussions and the most important initiatives will centre around them.

The programme involves 5 main thematic streams:
The crowning event of the year will be the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) — a biennial meeting designed to offer the scientific community a platform for interdisciplinary and intersectional discourse about scientific culture, scientific research and innovation.
