The EuroScience Open Forum 2024 (ESOF2024), which was held from 12 to 15 June in the International Congress Centre in Katowice, brought together leading scientists from Europe and the world under the slogan ‘Life changes science’. The programme included lectures, seminars, debates, workshops, poster presentations, and exhibitions. The conference theme centred around energy transition, sustainable development, cultural identity and societal transformation, scientific excellence, healthy society, and digital transformation. ESOF2024 programme featured several hundreds of speakers from Poland, Europe, and the world who took part in 130 thematic sessions and 90 poster presentations . The conference attracted approximately 3500 participants from 40 different countries . There were also accompanying events: EU Prize for Citizen Science 2024, Green Growth Ahead, and the European Talent Fair – a European job fair for young scientists and people interested in taking up research work. The last day of the conference presented a great opportunity to network outside the ICC and to discover the scientific potential of Silesian universities directly. The ESOF2024 conference was a meeting place, a dynamic platform for knowledge and innovation exchange, which showed that science is ever present in our lives. We often perceive science as abstract and disconnected from our everyday lives. This is why such events as ESOF2024 are so important. They remind us that science is not something foreign to us – it is a field that brings changes to many areas of our lives and responds to the challenges posed by reality. We would like to thank all participants for their active involvement and contribution to the success of the event.

Another day of the ESOF 2024 conference is behind us, filled with inspiring events and activities. Participants had the unique opportunity to take part in the EU TalentFair, addressed to early-stage academics and people interested in taking up research work. The event offered workshops where participants could learn about best practices in open science and develop their skills, e.g., in creating and implementing research data management plans. At the ESOF 2024 conference, participants could listen to inspiring lectures by distinguished keynote speakers: Jara Pascual (CEO of Collabwith), Sir Andy Haines (Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), Prof. Sabina Leonelli (University of Exeter, UK), Isto Huvila (Uppsala University, Sweden), Prof. Toma Susi (University of Vienna). The International Congress Center visitors could enjoy an all-day poster session and activities organised by the Horizontal Contact Point Southwestern Poland, which attracted great interest.
14 Jun, 2024
On Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m., you are invited to a free guided tour of a unique exhibition: "Within the City: Urban Art". In recent years, Katowice has made a name for itself with many innovative cultural and musical projects. There are already trails of murals, modernism and Silesian blues in the city. The title of European City of Science has provided an additional impetus for action. Since May 1, in the centre of Katowice, at 13 Staromiejska Street, there has been a temporary exhibition of works by outstanding artists such as: Roy Liechtenstein, Banksy, David LaChapelle and Andy Warhol. You can see prints, posters, photos, sculptures, figures and everyday objects. Venue: Katowice, 13 Staromiejska Street Time: Saturday, June 15, 1:00 p.m. Registration: urbanartkato24@gmail.com

ESOF2024 thematic areas

Discover six thematic areas of the ESOF2024 conference.

  • energy transition

The energy transition means changing the way energy has been delivered and used so far. In the common understanding, it is associated with solar energy obtained from photovoltaic panels, electric cars, and smog. But also, especially in coal regions, it is associated with the closing of coal mines and power plants, as well as unemployment.

Undoubtedly, the energy transition affects many companies, areas of activity, local communities, employees and families. Its success therefore requires a balanced approach, both technological and social, based on dialogue to develop common solutions that serve both current and future generations.

    Area description and session themes

  • sustainable environment

Each human activity, especially leading to improvement of the quality of human life, puts inevitable pressure on the natural environment. The effects of such pressure are visible in the form of constantly growing environmental pollution with new materials and substances that are hard to identify, decreasing accessibility of water ensuring survival for all living beings, global climate change, decreasing biodiversity and many other adverse phenomena.

The ESOF conference gives an opportunity to look at them from different points of view, understand, consider and either try to adapt to them or slow them down.

    Area description and session themes

  • cultural identity and societal transformation

What power lies in the arts and design – what can they change and how can they help in discovering identity? A collective reflection on the impact of creative activities on how we perceive the environment in which we function every day is barely the beginning of the searches for tools to change the region's image and the way we think about it.

The arts and design combined with science can disenchant complex topics, be an impulse to look further and deeper, and ask uncomfortable questions. They can initiate the process of transforming social stereotypes and make the feeling of being ‘from here’ something to be proud of.

    Area description and session themes

  • changes within scientific excellence

In today’s ever-changing world, our understanding of scientific excellence is constantly subject to transformations due to emerging challenges related to research methods, technological development, scientific evaluation, ethics of scientific research, digital era, and AI.

We would like to analyse the newest trends and conditions for excellent scientific research, look into the key scientific policies and the changes currently taking place in world’s science; we will attempt to understand their causes and effects.

    Area description and session themes

  • healthy society

Innovative research in chronic disease prevention, strategies for promoting mental health, health education, epidemiologic studies, health needs assessment, and the impact of environmental factors on health are the major topics of the conference sessions.

Experts from various fields of science and medical specialities were united by the desire to find effective solutions in the uneven struggle against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers and other illnesses. They will discuss therapeutic techniques, physical activity as a way to improve one’s mental health and the significance of environmental protection for public health. The goal is to identify effective strategies for disease prevention and improve the quality of life in society.

    Area description and session themes

  • digital transformation

Digital transformation is the development of information and communication technologies and the introduction of digital carriers in virtually all areas of the economy and social life. The networked world, increasingly saturated with digital sensors monitoring all areas of human functioning, is changing its face.

The Internet of Things, combined with the implementation of machine learning methods and artificial intelligence models, opens up a new range of commonly available participation opportunities. This is especially true for the challenges of being flooded with all kinds of data.

ESOF2022 in short

The previous edition of ESOF2022 took place in Leiden, the Netherlands, hosting over 1,500 delegates on-site and almost another thousand online. The conference's motto was: Crossing borders, engaged science, resilient societies. ESOF2022 allowed us to refresh our scientific contacts, make new friends, and spread enthusiasm for science.
